The first scene I wrote for this book is a man walking into a small business, introducing himself politely, and handing over a business card.

That's it. That's the whole scene, on the surface. No threats. No raised voices. If you didn't know what kind of book this was, you might not even clock him as the antagonist.

That was deliberate, and it's probably the single craft decision I'm proudest of so far. A villain who announces himself as dangerous is easy to brace against. A villain who's charming, reasonable, even likable for the first few pages, that's the one who actually gets under a reader's skin, because he's the one real people would actually let into their store.

I keep coming back to a simple rule while writing him: he should sound like someone selling a legitimate service, right up until the moment it matters that he isn't. The scarier version of “bad guy” isn't the one who scares you immediately. It's the one who doesn't, for just long enough.

More soon.
