Something happened this week that I don't think I can fully explain without giving too much away, so I'll say it carefully.

A small discovery showed up in this chapter, almost by accident, a secret sitting quietly underneath something else entirely. When I wrote it, I wasn't sure yet what it meant. I just knew it felt like the kind of detail a story doesn't hand you unless it wants you to use it later.

So I'm going to use it later.

This happens more than I expected when I started this book. The outline gets you most of the way there, but every so often the story hands you something unplanned, and the only sane response is to trust it. I still don't know exactly how this particular thread resolves. I just know, with total certainty, that it's going to matter.

That's either the best or the most nerve-wracking part of writing a novel. Possibly both.
